Cure For the Summertime Blues PDF Print E-mail

Last Year's 'light' series went so well we decided to do it again for the summer months of 2011.  For the months of June, July and August we will be focused on fellowship.  There won't be any lessons or talks - just cooking out, hanging out, having a great time and just getting to know each other better.

"L-DUB Light" as some of us call it is probably the best time for people to give M-PACT a try.  It's also the best time for our graduating seniors to dive in and get their first taste of men's ministry.  If you've been wanting to give M-PACT a shot, if you have been looking for a good time to invite someone to participate in a less 'churchy' environment or if you know of a young man who is 18, out of school and could you some positive, Christ-centered descipleship, meet us on the first Tuesday of every month.

This month we will be "Down at the Creek" north of Living Water Christian Fellowship church at 7:00 PM.  Bring your footballs, basketballs, frisbees, bows and targets, guitars - whatever it is you like to do - and have a sausage dog on us.  Following are dates for our summer months:

  • June - Tuesday, June 7th.  Down at the Creek at 7:00 PM
  • July - Tuesday, July 5th at 7:00 PM  (Location TBD)
  • August - Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:00 PM (Location TBD)

Growing up my dad always had two things: rabbits and gardens.  To be honest I don't miss the rabbits much.  I had to feed and water them as part of my chores and, pound for pound, I believe they produce more poop than any single living thing on the planet.  ...But I do miss the gardens.  Some of my fondest memories of childhood involve bare feet in cool, freshly tilled soil.  And, truthfully, looking back, those were the times when my dad seemed full, confident and happy.

Late this past sprint we actually planted ourselves a full-on garden.  Our little patch boasted onions, radishes, carrots, jalapeno and bell peppers, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, cabbage, cauliflower and corn.  We learned a lot about what did well, what did not, how to plant different things - and how not to - and what the bugs liked and what they left alone.   One of the things I really looked forward to was fresh, home-grown sweet corn!

We planted 3 rows.  Like the rest of the garden it germinated, grew, flourished and began to 'bear fruit.'  I remember how excited I was when I saw those first little ears with silk coming out of them.  I was like a proud papa.  ...then, the bugs showed up.  Apparently bugs and I share the same affinity for sweet corn.

Man's Man / God's Man - Recap Print E-mail

When you think of what it means to be a "man's man," what comes to mind?  ...maybe adjectives like strong, tough, rugged - you know, the leathered, dusty cowboy squeaking in his saddle atop his trusty steed?  Or maybe something like self-sufficient or self-reliant - an island unto himself needing nothing or no one.  Smart?  Macho?  ...Not village people macho but like "First Blood - the original Rambo" kind of macho.

Typically we assign our professional athletes to this model.  They're beastly physical specimens touting athletic prowess that is the stuff of legends.  If anyone in our culture were a 'manly man' it would be that guy!

Our culture today is peppered with world-class athletes who think they are all that ... and a bag of potato chips.   They have personas that are larger than life and egos to match.  They have nicknames like "King James," "Prime Time," and "Ocho Cinco." (or, as I call him, the receiver formerly known as Chad)  They tell us "It's showtime!" or "Get your popcorn ready" to flaunt their wares. The media eats it up.  We eat it up.  And so do they.  So, the question is, how does your picture of God's man differ from your picture of man's man?

Man's Man / God's Man - Part II RECAP Print E-mail

Last month we introduced "God's Man."  He is, in all ways, a 'man's man' but he lives his life in stark contrast to the way the world perceives a 'manly man.'  God's man is filled not only with testosterone and passion, but with Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control.  (Galatians 5:22, 23)  He is very much a 'man's man' but his is more.  He is God's man.

In July, we fleshed out what it means to be God's man with these Spiritual fruits above.  This month we gave God's man some teeth and some bite by talking about what it takes to be God's man in the three broad, basic areas of life that take up most of our time while we aren't catching "zzz...s" with our heads on our pillows.  We talked about what it takes and what it means to be God's man as a; husband and father, an employee or employer, and as a friend and follower of Christ.

Being God's man as a husband sounds easy on the surface.  All we have to do, according to Colossians 3:19 is love our wives and not be harsh with them.  Piece of cake, right?  ...Eh, not so much.  The level of love we're called to is a bit more intimate and sacrificial than the world's version.
